Although a rather short work (lasting only about 2 1/2 minutes), Rhythmetrics probably contains more notes in it than most of David's other works combined. The piece is comprised of a single-note rhythmic motif that is overlapped upon itself. As each voice enters (displaced by a beat or half a beat), the texture thickens, creating a framework upon which the rest of the musical material is presented. Originally written for six Trumpets, Rhythmetrics features the brass section, but makes use of the entire orchestra in both rhythmic and melodic ways. Intense and exciting, this piece serves well as an opening work for any concert.
