Fanfare for Six Trumpets begins with separate fanfares by four trumpets placed in opposing corners of the performance area. The four fanfares are then combined to create a chaotic effect. The two trumpets on stage answer in a fashion similar to that of Igor Stravinsky's "Fanfare for a New Theatre" with its many repeated notes and close intervals. The other four trumpets soon enter and the excitement slowly dies away to a single trumpet playing in the distance. The next section is un-metered as the offstage trumpets play repeated fanfares underlying a majestic theme announced by the two onstage trumpets. Eventually, all six fanfares come together in a rising climax and the fanfare soon ends with a brilliant chord, stylistic of trumpet fanfares.
